CANA - Day 4 (Tuesday)

The weather is again HOT, HOT, HOT !!

The Under 15's played Marleston (Blue) at 10.30am, and the U/21's played Huon at the same time.

Under 15's had a tough game and struggled to keep in touch with Marleston. The girls were 7 goals down at 3/4 time and decided to give it their all in the final term. This decision paid off and they won the game by 4 goals (11 goal turn around) - Way to Go Girls !!!

I am told that the Under 21's were not able to get on top of Huon and eventually went down by 6 goals.

The Under 13's played Marleston at a much better time - 5.00pm. Right from the first whistle AYC were under the pump and with Ellie Gray leaving the court unable to breathe, Renae Brelis took to the court in the Centre position. With the girls thinking that playing behind and only looking at certain players to pass to, they were easily accounted for by Marleston.

Rebecca Joseph and Chelsea York tried hard.

The Under 17's played Huon also at 5.00pm. Huon were no match for the speedy AYC team and with accurate shooting from Claire and Jess along with tough defence from Ellen & timely intercepts from Chontel in the Centre, AYC were standout winners!!

Best players: Claire Minton, Genn Sullivan and Chontel Madson

As Ian and I had a full day to ourselves - we went to the Ferry to see Ash & Steve leave for the Barrier Reef. We then changed our accommodation and headed for the Strand for a while.

CANA Day 3 Continued...........

It's been an extremely warm day here in Townsville. Ian and I spent quite a bit of time alond The Strand today and Ian actually had a swin in the ocean.

The girls (U/13's & U/17's) played at 5.00pm and they were proven to be tough games against SAUCNA (south australian united church netball association).

Our Under 13's had a very disappointing game and failed to perform in all areas of the game. They were convincingly defeated 44-14. :-(

The Under 17's game was fantastic to watch. Claire and Nat Curtis teamed brilliantly in the goal circle and they were fed accurately from Zoe Brown and Chontel Madson playing Centre and WA respectively.
Jess Boulter came on to give Nat Curtis a well earned rest and she continued to combine well with Claire who was playing GA.

Genn Sullivan and Laura Reggett held up the defensive end and made some spectacular intercepts. They went on to win the game by 2 goals. The girls hard fought attack on all loose balls and fast paced aggressive style of play is why they are undefeated to date.
Best Players: Claire Minton, Genn Sullivan and Zoe Brown. Well Done Girls !!!
Hope you like our photos i've posted. The girls have a rest day on Wednesday, so Ian and I are taking Chels, Kalinda and Claire to Magnetic Island on the ferry. They're looking forward to that.

(Lisa, hope this colour of print is much better for your aging eyes - LOL !!!)

CANA Day 3 and it's Hot, Hot, Hot !!!

The U/15's played first at 9.00am. Although I was unable to watch the game, I understand that they easily accounted for Corcoran Park (gold) 72-15. Well Done Girls. (Sara White was able to take the court having recovered from severe cramp in the first game). Well Done Girls !!!

The Under 17's also played at 9.00am. As the sun beat down on the courts, it was extremely difficult for the players to keep cool. We were lucky to be able to sit and watch the game from a sheltered area (due to the early time slot).

The girls got off to a great start and the game flow just continued on from there. With accurate shooting, great teamwork in the centrecourt and fantastic defence at the other end of the court, the team easily accounted for Marleston 47-26.

Best players: Genn Sullivan, Nat Curtis & Zoe Brown. (Claire Minton and Laura Reggett were rested for the first half, but definitely proved their worth when taking to the court in the third quarter). Great game to watch !!

The Under 13's played in the next timeslot at 10.30am. Ian and I found a spot to put our chairs - under a huge tree at the bottom end of the court. Fuzz and the under 17's joined us later to watch the girls play.

Chelsea at GA teamed with Kate Archer at GS and with excellent feeding from the circle by Bec Joseph and Renae Brelis the girls steadily increased their lead throughout the game.

Tahlia Hayton played well in defence when she came on at half time to give Kalinda Gasparin a rest from the heat. The girls combined well and easily accounted for Corcoran Park (blue) 44-20.
Best players were: Bec Joseph, Kate Archer and Tahlia Hayton.
Teams play their 5th game later today - will keep you posted !!

Sunday 28 September 2008

CANA - Day 2 Continued .......

The afternoon games were a little easier today. The Under 13's notched up their first win against Corcoran Park (gold). Chelsea played GS for the entire game and teamed with Lauren to pile on the goals. Kate Archer and Georgia Downward were rested for the game enabling Tahlia Hayton and Kalinda Gasparin to work on their defensive teamwork. Rebecca Joseph played well in WA with Ellie Gray backing up in the Centre position. Final Score was 30-15 !!! Well Done Girls.
Best players : Bec Joseph; Ellie Gray and Lauren Downward

The Under 17's were outstanding against Corcoran Park also. Claire was rested after half time along with Ellen Bowerman who has unfortunately injured her groin. Hopefully with a little rest and icing and stretches she may be able to take the court in the fourth game on Monday. The final score was 37-11.
Best Players : Nat Curtis, Genn Sullivan and Zoe Brown

The Under 15's had another win this afternoon, but I'm unable to update you with a score as we were not at the game.

The Under 21's played in the evening and they secured a 6 goal win against Corcoran Park (Blue). The only downside is: Rach Siely suffering from severe foot blisters, Jade Polonowski has a very sore calf muscle and Chloe Bennett was carried from the court with another ankle injury and probably wont play again during the carvival :(.
Best Players were: Kristy Paul, Nicole Terry and Rachael Siely.

The Under 17's commence games at 9.00am on Monday followed by U/13's at 10.30am. The weather is expected to be more of the same - cloudless, calm and HOT, HOT, HOT !!!

Ian is loving it.

Day 2 of CANA Championships

All teams played their second matches earlier today. They are all expected to play their 3rd match later in the day.

The U/13's played Marleston at 9.00am this morning. It was a relatively close game right through to the final quarter with the match tied going into the final term.
Renae Brelis and Tahlia Hayton both took tumbles earlier in the match and the team was under the pump having thrown away many opportunities with sloppy passes and far too many held ball penalties.
Marleston League ran away with the win in the final quarter defeating AYC 27-39.
The girls will get a second shot at this team later in the week and it should be noted that Marleston League defeated SAUCNA last night - so both teams can be beaten!!
Best players: Tahlia Hayton, Ellie Gray & Renae Brelis

The U/17's played Huon today at 10.30am. The Huon girls struggled against the quick AYC girls and with Laura Reggett and Genn Sullivan teaming well in defence and intercepting many loose passes they were runaway winners 48-16.
Best players: Laura Reggett, Genn Sullivan & Jess Boulter

The U/15's and U/21's played at 12 noon and 1.30pm respectively. In the heat of the day we did not stay to watch those games and therefore we're unable to give you an update with the scores at this time.

All teams play again later this afternoon, so I will update our blog as soon as I can.

Cheers
Lisa

First Day of CANA Championships has arrived!!

The opening ceremony at 9.00am this morning was GREAT !!

All the teams lined up and then paraded around the courts and then positioned themselves on the outskirts of of the main courts for the official opening of the Championships - AYC lead the way !!!

The girls were given an offical Aboriginal Welcome also (photos above).

The Under 15 team played their first game at 10.30am against SAUCNA. Sara White was unstoppable in the goal circle and her shooting acuracy enabled the team to outscore SAUCNA at every change and eventually won the match by 5 goals !!

The Under 13's and Under 17's both played their first games at 12 noon. (at least the games were on adjacent courts that made it a little easier for Ian and I to watch both games).

The Under 13's were under the pump right from the first centre pass and were not prepared for the hard and fast playing style from the SAUCNA team. They rushed their shots and threw away a lot of passes throughout the game and enabled SAUCNA to be runaway winners 43-16. Best players were: Ellie Gray, Renae Brelis and Chelsea York.

The Under 17's had a very hard fought game. With the lead changing several times throughout the match, every shot at goal was to count and accurate passing was the key to the game. AYC were heading into the final quarter with a 7 goal lead, but with missed shots and failure to rebound SAUCNA closed the gap and it became a close game at the end. AYC eventually won 29-28. Best players were: Gennaveve Sullivan, Laura Reggett & Claire Minton.

The weather is HOT, HOT, HOT!!! The girls are applying sunscreen and drinking plenty of fluids. The girls play 2 games tomorrow (sunday) so the girls will be looking forward to a restful night tonight!!

If you'd like to leave a message for any of the girls here in Townsville - please do and I'll pass it on for you.

Cheers

Cripps Waratah Netball Club Awards Night 2008

The 2008 Junior Awards night was held on Saturday 20 September at the Showgrounds.

What an enjoyable night !!

All the junior teams were represented (u/11's through to U/17's) and all of the teams were very attentive whilst the awards were presented and it was very pleasing to see the older age groups congratuate the younger players when they received their medals and certificates. In particular the U/11 Blue team who were presented with medalions for their Premiership win.

I have attached a few photos that were taken on the night for you to have a squizz at.

Presentation of CANA Teams and Fun Day

The CANA teams had their last get-together on Sunday before we head to Townsville on Friday (26 September 2008). The four teams (U/13's, U/15's, U/17's & U/21's) divided into 4 mixed teams and competed against each other in fun games (relays, "treasure" hunts & miscellaneous games).

Afterwards the girls (and parents) enjoyed a bbq lunch (snags, burgers and kebabs) and fruit platters for lunch. There were also ice creams for those who wanted to indulge (just about everyone!!)

The Coaches and Managers of each team then presented their players to parents and supporters. All team members were given a sports bag and drink bottles and the Captain & Vice Captains were named for each team.

The teams leave Tassie for Townsville at 7.00am on Friday morning. It's been rather chilly and windy here today so the warmer weather is beckoning for everyone !!!

I've included some photos from the "fun day" on Sunday for you have a look at.

Sunday 14 September 2008

It was our last official training session today !!

Today the girls participated in their last official training session before the CANA Championships in Townsville. There were a few girls absent from each team due to the School Holidays here in Tassie and they attended family holidays.

The U/13 girls are now very, very excited as it is under 2 weeks before we head to Townsville. Next week they will participate in the fun / presentation day where all of the teams will be presented and the Captain and Vice Captains will be named for each team.

The girls struggled today with the high winds that made it extremely difficult for the goalies to score when practise matches occurred. The Under 13's gave the U/15's a run for their money and the U/17's and U/21's slogged it out on court 3.

The sun was quite warm, but then the dark clouds loomed over head, but the wind kept them at bay long enough to enable the girls to complete their training session.

All teams will be presented to parents and supporters next Sunday (21 September) at the "Fun Day" and they will receive their last minute items and enjoy a BBQ lunch.

How exciting there's only 12 more sleeps until we fly to Townsville, so eat well, sleep well and keep safe girls !!!

Y-Nots fail in their bid against Odds & Evens!!

Our second game of mixed netball last night was a very competitive tussle, and not one of the 14 players on the court could walk away not feeling like they'd given their all !!

GS Lisa Y.
GA Phil S.
WA Jo R.
C Ian Y.
WD Claire M.
GD Bec B.
GK Darren B.

Scorers: Laura & Judy B
Supporters: Chelsea Y. and James A.

(absent players: Lisa B. and Tracey T. both in Launceston at Eistedfords, Matthew G. on holiday in Fiji and Melissa C. is unfortunately sick - get well soon Mel)

The Y-Nots secured a "fill in" player with Jo and she gladly filled the position of WA but also swapped her bib with Ian during the half time break and gave him a short rest while she played in the Centre for the 3rd quarter.

It was a very physical game with all players competing for the loose balls and at quarter time Odds and Evens were in the lead by only 1 goal. They kicked on in the second quarter and with Y-Nots losing concentration at times and having too many turnovers, the Odds & Evens went into the long break with a 4 goal advantage.

Lisa and Phil combined well in the circle during the 3rd quarter and with the assistance of Jo and Ian on the circle they were able to pile on a few goals, however so did Helen and Rick at the other end of the court and we went into the final quarter still with Odds & Evens 4 goals up.

The final quarter was a difficult one. Ian went back into the Centre and Jo at WA. Bec went into GK and Darren was having a run at GD alongside Claire (Fuzz) at WD. Only a few minutes into the quarter, Darren called time as he "twinged" his hamstring, so he and Bec swapped bibs and he battled on.

It was a great hard fought game filled with speed, intercepts and some terrific shooting from Rick (Odds & Evens) and the Odds and Evens eventually ran out the victors by 6 goals.

Well Done Y-Nots !!

Not long til we fly to Townsville now !!!!

C.A.N.A. training on Sunday was good. Although being the school holidays here in Tassie at the moment, 3 of the under 13 players were unable to attend. Kalinda (on holiday in FIJI with her parents), Kate (skiing holiday with her family) and Ellie (at Devon Netball Carnival with her sister).

With showers looming and half training session over, the U/13's headed into the club rooms to try on their playing uniform for the Townville Championships. As the girls helped each other (along with Michelle & Helen) to properly fit the skirts and tops, I was on hand to take some photos of the girls in their green, gold, red and white uniforms - they were all very excited !!

Helen also distributed their warm up tops (Gold with green trim and name on the back) the association also gave them a Gold bucket hat for the girls to wear in Townsville to keep the sun from their faces and heads.

The U/17's played a practise match against the U/21's. Both teams were very competitive and are gearing up for a Fantastic Carnival in Townsville. I have attached some shots of the girls in action and both teams look set to take on the other teams from the mainland states.

The U/15's had a different training session this week. They entered the Devon Carnival in the U/17 division to enable the them to have some hard, competitive match play before we head to Townsville.

Only just over 2 weeks before we head off to Townsville. I must say with Southern Tassie experiencing some chilly weather at the moment, the warmer climate will be welcomed with open arms - BRING IT ON !!!

"Y-Nots" Triumphant in first game of Mixed Netball!!

Our very talented team (ROFL) The Y-Nots won their first game of the Mixed Netball roster on Thursday night (4 September 2008). We have a registered team of 10 players, however due to other commitments we played the game with only 7 players present.

(just as well we have registered 10 players - phew!!)

Our line up was as follows:

GS Lisa Y.
GA Tracey T.
WA Claire M.
C Ian Y.
WD Matthew G.
GD Bec B.
GK Darren B.
Scorer: Angela G.
Supporters: Kalinda G. Chloe G. & Laura B.

Although we made couple of changes at half time (swapped C & WA along with GS & GA) then quite a few changes in the final quarter (Darren went into GA, Lisa & Ian played GK & GD respectively & Bec went into WA running with Claire in C) we were able to hold off "Black Betty's" attempt to increase their score with Matthew, Bec and Claire taking many intercepts in the Centre court area.

I have attached photo of the fellas who had just played the first two quarters of the game. The wet hair shows just how much they were contributing to our win - FANTASTIC EFFORT BOYS !!!

We're looking forward to our second game this Thursday night (11 September) and this time we get to play indoors on Court 5 at 6.40pm. We nominated for Division 3, however the team we played last week were a side that apparently competed in Division 2 last season - we could find ourselves being elevated to a higher division :-o
I guess that's what happens when we're so competitive. (is our team moto "win at all costs??") - LOL :-)

I'm sorry it's taken a few days to place this information onto our blog page, but I promise to post our game results on the night of our games or at the very least - the following day !!

Don't forget to leave a comment after reading our blog page

C.A.N.A. - U/13 Team "Get-Together"

The U/13's had their Team "Get-together" tonight for dinner at AYC Clubrooms at Bayswater Road. Everyone bought along a dish to share (they had quite a selection: sushi, biscuits & dip, assorted cheeses & fruit, pasta, nachos and pizza) the main meal was then followed by dessert (pavlova, cream cake, mud cake and assorted chocolates).

Michelle (the team coach) told the girls on Sunday that they should decide on a theme for their get-together - so guess what.......everyone had to wear their pyjamas!!! The girls (and us mum's) thought it was terrific that Michelle and Helen (team manager) doned their pj's as well !!

The girls put their heads together and wrote down their personal and team aims, goals & objectives for what they want to achieve during the carnival in Townsville. Michelle collected their thoughts and no doubt she will be reminding the girls of them throughout the duration of the week long carnival.
The Captain and Vice Captain were named tonight. Congratulations to:
Georgia Downward - Captain
Ellie Gray - Vice Captain

The excitment is building and each of the girls are looking forward to the carnival that begins on the 27 September 2008 in Townsville.

I have attached a few of the photos that were taken tonight at the team "get-together".

Please let me know what you think by leaving a comment !!

Monday 1 September 2008

It's Sunday, but that doesn't mean it's a day of rest!!

We arrived at CANA training today at 9.55am. Angela and Kalinda arrived at the same time as us, and as Angela was travelling behind us she witnessed Ian "dancing" (at least his head was) to Kung Fu Fighting as we made our way to Bayswater Road (how embarassing hehehe).

The girls kicked off the training run with a Team photo - in full uniform - taken by Michael Webb. He's a gem and allowed me to take a team photo on my own camera before he took his snaps. (They're the ones posted on this page!!).

The girls then got into full swing of the training session and after they finished their ball handling drills they took on the U/15 team in a game.

The U/15's were on most occasions very strong and of course much bigger, but overall the U/13's held their own and were able to move the ball around the court and outclassed the older girls a few times and were able to finish off with goals from Lauren and Chelsea playing GA and GS respectively.

Talia playing WD teamed well with Georgia - GD and Kalinda at GK and they were able to minimise the U/15's opportunities to score quickly. They soon realised that the U/13's meant business and they had to make several additional passes around the circle before they could pass into their goalies - WELL DONE DEFENDERS !!!

Rebecca playing WA was able to run her opponent raggered and then re-offer to Ellie playing C who then passed into the goalies. Although the U/15's clearly outscored the U/13's the girls should be proud of their efforts and with a few more weeks training should be able to give the other teams in Townsville a run for their money - WELL DONE GIRLS !!

After training we visited my close friend Tamika and her husband Marcus who are now proud parents a handsome little boy - ETHAN PAUL !!

The cutiest little fella arrived 3 weeks early last Sunday and although his arrival was not without some dramas, he his just a delight to spoil and we certainly gave him plenty of cuddles.

I saw a program on TV this afternoon where Paul Mercurio was in Townsville and we have been able to view a places we'd like to see when we go there in.......27 days (Chels is counting). Especially one place called The Frosty Mango (they make their own Sorbet's and there were plenty of flavours to choose from (Chels and Fuzz can hardly wait)

Ok that's it for now - dont forget to leave a comment !!
